I need some decoration inspiration.

Ryan and Dylan share a room.

We’ve lived in this house for a year now, and I’ve yet to do a single thing to their bedroom. It consists of a bunk bed and two dressers. And an overflowing dirty laundry basket – let’s not forget that lovely design feature.

The rest of the house still needs a lot of “embellishing” too, but their bedroom is especially barren.

I’m stuck.

They are 7 and 5 years old. It seems anything I see to decorate their room with is too babyish or too grown up or too stinkin’ expensive.

Suggestions? Themes? Websites where I could find some (cheap) inspiration? Help a girl out!

  1. When I was 7, I loved cars, boats, planes, transportation stuff. What I really wanted was a “garage” theme for my room. Centerpiece was going to be a real overhead door into the room, 30 or 36 inches wide. Maybe some recycled and cleaned metal building materials for the inside. The roll-up door would really make it though.

  2. You can’t go wrong with primary colors – reds, blues, yellows

Jonah’s room is pretty age-neutral right now and we mostly used red, blue, brown and green. Of course, his room is nothing to shout about either. hum.

  3. One of my friends had a really cute idea. Her son loves Superheros. She found several action hero posters and framed them. I’m sure you can find plastic poster frames that would be relatively inexpensive. She also found these amazing life-sized superhero wall tattoos. I’m sure those weren’t cheap, but if you only bought one or two it might be worth it. Good luck!

  4. I don’t know what your boys are in to, but we are working on a space themed room for our 6 year old right now. Seems pretty age-generic. We have bunk beds too, and I bought bed-in-a-bags for what I thought was pretty cheap on ebay. Medium-dark-blue wall paint with white splatters makes a great Milky Way, and we bought one of those moon phases lights with a 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby. They also have several different types of solar systems there that you can build/put together and hang from the ceiling. Glow in the dark plastic stars for walls or ceiling. I am currently making an “earth” bulletin board out of a ceiling tile – this will go alongside the moon light! 🙂 Found some large wall stickers at Science Spectrum for not too terribly much. Let us know what you decide!

  5. For me the starting point would be finding comforters that a) all parties agree on and b) you can afford. Shouldn’t be too difficult to go on from there
